Current Proposed School Budget

by Lynn K. McMullin

The current proposed school budget is now a 2.08% increase or an increase of
$457,788. Since just two line items - salaries and benefits - total $501, 000, it's obvious there have been many decreases. Furthermore, the 2.08% increase includes Capital Improvements and $195,000 for a down-payment and architect for two or three much needed modular classrooms at Cherry Brook Primary School. Most area school districts fund Capital Improvements separately from the education budget.

Please view the budget presentation on Nutmeg TV on Tuesday, April 14th at 5:30 p.m. or Wednesday, April 15th at 9:30 p.m.
Please attend the Board of Finance's Public hearing on Thursday, April 16 at 7:00 at the Canton Community center and their Budget Workshop on Tuesday, April 21st, at 4:00 p.m. also at the Community Center.

  1. Is the BOE increase still at 2.08%? I read in the April 23, 2009 Hartford Courant that the BOE requested a 2.08% increase but is only receiving a 1.2%. If that is the case, what additional cuts are being made to get the BOE budget down to a 1.2% increase?

  2. No, the BOE increase is no longer at 2.08%. At its Budget Workshop meeting on April 21st, the Board of Finance made an additional $200,000 cut, resulting in the 1.2% increase you saw in the Hartford Courant.
The Administration and Finance Sub-Committee of the Board of Education are still talking about from where the cut will come, but no final decision will be made until after the budget is approved by the town, either at the Town Meeting on Monday, May 11th, or by referendum. The vote is crucial to any future decision-making because, if the town does not approve the budget and an additional cut is made, the budget would change yet again. Once the Board of Education knows the final budget number, the hard work of cutting and balancing will be finally undertaken.
